Are you striving?
Do you feel something is just beyond your grasp?
Does it create a feeling of fatigue, anxiety or hopelessness?
Do you have a list of those things?
Is that your only list? Why?
Which wolf are you feeding?
Have you heard the Cherokee tale about the two wolves?
The metaphor speaks of a battle between the evil black one and the good white one. One is jealous, angry, arrogant, and prideful, while the other is filled with peace, love, and joy. The young grandson of the old Cherokee looks up in his grandfather’s eyes and asks “Which one wins?” The grandfather looks to his grandson and replies “The one you feed.” A powerful tale isn’t it?
Every morning we have an opportunity to feed one of our wolves, and we all have some of both inside us. Although God created us in his image, we have been given rule over our choices. A quote by Frank Sonnenberg reads “You have the freedom to choose, but you’re not free from the consequences of those choices.”
Our God, the Almighty Creator gave us freedom to make our own choices, and though he cares for us and loves us unconditionally, there are consequences to evil thoughts which become manifested decisions. What we choose to think on will grow. “Oh,Heidi it’s just a negative thought, it doesn’t mean anything.“ The Bible speaks on this in Matthew 26:52 ~ “Put your sword back in its place because all who take up the sword will perish by the sword.”
Martin Luther King explains this in greater detail; “Hate begets hate, violence begets violence; toughness begets greater toughness. We must meet the power of hate with the power of love.”
Love your neighbor today. Make one step to love and pray for someone who cannot return the favor. They need it the most. God calls us Christians to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. God promises to fight our battles for us. It may not look like what we would’ve done, or in the timing we would like, but it’s going to be no less perfect!
Thank you Lord for fighting my battles, and for your words today.
